Captain Kamara’s Double Strike Propels Sierra Leone U-20 to Victory against Liberia

The Sierra Leone National U-20 team, Shooting Stars took a significant step towards the next stage of the ongoing AFCON U-20 qualifiers by defeating the host nation, Liberia 3-1 at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia.

After drawing their opening match against Guinea, Shooting Stars approached today’s game with panache and pedigree. Their efforts paid off when the team’s captain, Momoh Ibrahim Kamara delivered an outstanding performance and opened the deadlock in the 37th minute. Kamara skillfully navigated through an Idrissa Sesay low cross assist to put Sierra Leone in the lead.

The momentum continued in grand style in the second half of proceedings when Santigie Fornah doubled the lead in the 50th minute. Fornah capitalized on a precision pass from Sallieu Bah sending the ball into the back of the net. This goal showcased the synergy between the Petrolul FC-based player and his teammates.

Liberia’s Junior Lone Stars briefly revived their hopes in the 62nd minute when Sierra Leone’s defender, Mohamed Koroma inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, making the score 2-1. However, their celebration was short-lived when Kamara struck again in the 68th minute securing the brace and sealing the victory for Sierra Leone. The Portugal-based Leixos Sporting forward was named Man of the Match for the second time in the tournament having previously earned the accolade against Guinea.

This crucial win gives Sierra Leone a significant advantage as they head into their final Group A match against Guinea Bissau on Saturday 22nd September 2024. A victory in this match will solidify Shooting Stars progression into the semifinals.

Head Coach Mohamed Lamin Kamara expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance stating, “It was a good performance by the team. Our aim is to qualify for the upcoming U-20 AFCON and I am confident in the team’s ability to deliver under any circumstances.”

Shooting Stars’ journey continues with high hopes and a clear objective: to secure their place in the U-20 AFCON and make their nation proud.
