Six U15 national teams from six West African Football Union (WAFU) zone member countries will come to Liberia next month to participate in the 2022 WAFU ‘A’ U15 nations tournament.
The tournament will take place from August 18-20. It shall coincide with the CAF Women’s champions league qualifiers that will also be played in Liberia from August 17-21. The Liberia Football Association President and Acting President of WAFU Zone A, Mustapha Raji, announced the hosting of the tournament in Liberia at a news conference held on Wednesday.
The last edition of the tournament was held in Guinea, which saw Senegal emerge as champions of Group 1 and Guinea as champions of Group 2. Liberia’s U15 national team ended the tournament with a win, a draw, and a defeat in three games in Group B.
In this year’s edition, six nations including Liberia, Cape Verde, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Mali, and The Gambia will participate in the tournament in a round-robin format with one team emerging as champions, while the two losers from the semifinals will face each other in the 3rd play playoff.
The fixtures for the tournament will be published in the coming weeks. The Director of Competitions at WAFU, Abdoulaye Cisse, has been in the country for the past few days working to ensure the successful hosting of the tournaments in Liberia.
The last time Liberia hosted a WAFU tournament was in 2018, when it hosted the U20 category that was won by The Gambia. Liberia ended as runners-up.
